MIJ FM
The radio station of the Malawi Institute of Journalism in Blantyre, where trained presenters and journalism students make news, talk and music. Listen free on your phone or tune in on FM.
- 92.8 & 93.0 FM
- About 85 MB an hour online
- On air since 2001
Quick answer: Tap Listen live now below. It opens MIJ FM’s online player, the same one the Malawi Institute of Journalism links on its own website. Tap the white play arrow. It is free and uses about 85 MB of data an hour. On FM, try 92.8 or 93.0, the numbers Malawi’s regulator MACRA gives the station.
Three ways to listen
Listen live on your phone
No app and no sign-up. All you need is a browser and some data or Wi-Fi.
Open the MIJ FM player
Tap the Listen live now button at the top of this guide. It opens a small player page on onlineradiobox.com with the Malawi Institute of Journalism logo.
Prefer to start from the source? On mijmw.com, scroll to Quick Links and tap Tune to MIJ Radio. It opens the same player.
Tap the white play arrow
The play arrow sits on the dark bar under the station name. Tap it once.

The play arrow is on the dark bar. Listen, and stop when you are done
The sound starts after a few seconds. The word playing appears under the station name and the arrow turns into an orange square. Tap the square to stop.

Playing: tap the orange square to stop.
Your browser may say “Not secure”. The MIJ FM stream uses an older http link, so the address bar shows a warning. It is safe to listen, but do not type passwords or personal details on that page. Keep the page open while you listen.
Use the player, not the big station page. The main Online Radio Box page for MIJ FM has a play button too, but phone browsers block this http stream there, so it stays silent. The small player page from our button or from mijmw.com works.
MIJ FM frequencies
MACRA’s current FM plan gives MIJ FM two national frequencies, 92.8 and 93.0 FM. It does not say which town uses which, and the station does not publish a list, so try both.
- 92.8 FM
- 93.0 FM
Anywhere in Malawi
- 92.8FMTry first
- 93.0FMThen try
Older numbers. Radio directories still list MIJ FM’s frequencies from before MACRA’s new plan, such as 91.5 in the south, 107.1 in the centre and 99.1 in the north, and in its early years it was 90.3 in Blantyre. Try 92.8 and 93.0 first. If neither comes in, try the old number for your region, or use Way 1.
No radio set? Use your phone’s FM app
- Plug in wired earphones. The cable is the aerial, so Bluetooth earphones will not work.
- Open the FM Radio app. Many Tecno, itel and Infinix phones have one built in.
- Type 92.8 or 93.0, or tap Scan and look for MIJ.
- Want the loudspeaker? Switch the sound to the speaker, but leave the earphones plugged in.
It uses no data and no airtime. iPhones do not have an FM app, so use Way 1.
How much data does MIJ FM use online?
MIJ FM streams at 192 kbps (we measured it in October 2026), the highest of the Malawi stations we have tested. That is more than Radio ABC or Radio Alinafe (about 60 MB an hour) and about five times Times Radio, Zodiak or Radio Maria (about 15 MB an hour). The sound is very clear, but a small bundle goes fast, so FM is the better choice inside Malawi. Live radio keeps using data until you press stop. More ways to stretch a bundle: our mobile data guide.
MIJ news, videos and updates
We found no way to replay past MIJ FM shows. The institute runs a news website written by its staff and students, and posts on YouTube and Facebook.
Video uses far more data than radio. On a small bundle, stick to Way 1 or Way 2.
Who runs MIJ FM?
MIJ FM belongs to the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ), which was set up in 1995 to train journalists after Malawi returned to multi-party democracy. Its main campus is on Masauko Chipembere Highway in Chichiri, Blantyre.
The station started in 2001 as a radio laboratory for journalism students in Blantyre, with support from the Danish Embassy. When that support ended in 2004 it turned to advertising, took a commercial licence and grew into a national station. In May 2004 police closed it after it aired an opposition interview, and the High Court in Blantyre ordered it reopened days later.
Today MIJ FM mixes news, talk and music with community programmes. Since December 2025 it has run French Corner, a one-hour French lesson made with the Alliance Française de Blantyre, on Wednesdays at 2pm.

MIJ FM FAQ
Is it free to listen online?
Yes. There is no fee, account or app needed. You only pay for the data you use, about 85 MB an hour.
Can I listen from outside Malawi?
Yes. The online player works anywhere in the world. Malawi is on Central Africa Time (GMT+2), so check the time at home before your favourite show.
Is MIJ FM a student station?
It began as a training station for MIJ’s journalism students, and students still get hands-on practice there. It is also a licensed national station with professional presenters, news and advertising, so it is for everyone.
Why does MIJ FM not play on Zeno.fm?
MIJ’s website links to a Zeno.fm page, but that link is broken, and the MIJ FM page on Zeno.fm would not start when we tested it in October 2026. Use the Online Radio Box player from this guide or from mijmw.com instead.
Is there an MIJ FM app?
We could not find an MIJ FM app of its own. The player page needs no install. Avoid “Malawi radio” apps from other developers that only repackage streams.
