Malawi Visa on Arrival: Who Qualifies and How to Apply

Quick summary: Many travellers can obtain a Malawi visa on arrival at international airports and selected border posts, or apply in advance through the e-visa portal. Requirements include a valid passport, return ticket, proof of funds, and the visa fee in USD or equivalent.

Malawi welcomes tourists, business visitors, and regional travellers through Kamuzu International Airport (Lilongwe), Chileka International Airport (Blantyre), and land borders with Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Immigration rules change periodically, so check official sources before you fly.

Visa on arrival basics

Citizens of many countries – including most African states, the EU, UK, USA, and several Asian nations – can purchase a tourist visa on arrival for stays typically up to 30 days (extensions may be possible at immigration offices). You will complete a disembarkation form, present your passport (valid at least six months beyond entry), and pay the prescribed fee. As of recent policy, fees are often quoted in US dollars; carry cash in small denominations.

E-visa option

Malawi’s Department of Immigration also operates an electronic visa system that lets travellers apply online before departure. An approved e-visa can reduce queue time on arrival and is worth considering during peak travel seasons or if your nationality requires pre-authorisation. Apply only through the official government portal – avoid third-party sites that overcharge.

Documents to carry

  • Passport with blank pages and six-month validity
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host letter)
  • Sufficient funds (bank statement or cash – officers may ask)
  • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a endemic country

Business visitors and volunteers should carry invitation letters from sponsoring organisations. Overland travellers entering at Mchinji, Songwe, or Dedza borders should confirm visa availability at that specific post – not every crossing offers full visa services.

Regional agreements

SADC nationals often enjoy simplified entry under regional protocols, but rules vary by country of citizenship. COMESA business travellers may qualify for special permits – ask immigration if applicable.
