Rising above the old colonial capital, the Zomba Plateau is one of the easiest nature escapes in southern Malawi. It is cooler than the lowlands, covered in pine and indigenous forest, and full of streams, waterfalls and lookouts.
Getting there
The plateau road climbs from Zomba town, and the drive up takes a short time in a normal car in the dry season. In the rains the road can be rough, so ask locally before you go.
What to see
Popular stops include the waterfalls along the Mulunguzi stream, the dam, and viewpoints on the plateau edge that look out over the Shire Highlands on a clear day. Local guides can take you on longer forest walks.
When to go
The dry, cool months are the most comfortable for walking. Mornings are often misty, which is beautiful but can hide the views, so plan lookouts for later in the day.
Tips
Bring a warm layer, because it is noticeably colder at the top. Buy fruit from the roadside sellers, carry cash for guides and entry fees, and agree prices before you set off.
