Quick summary: Lake Malawi’s sandy beaches stretch from Salima and Senga Bay through Mangochi to Cape Maclear and the southern lakeshore. Dry season (May-October) is ideal; book lodges ahead for holidays. Bilharzia risk exists – ask locally about treatment and avoid swallowing water.

Lake Malawi – Lake Nyasa to Tanzanians – holds more fish species than any other lake on Earth and some of Africa’s clearest freshwater swimming. For Malawians, it is the default holiday; for visitors, it rivals any coastal escape without an ocean for a thousand kilometres.

Senga Bay and Salima

Closest major beach to Lilongwe (roughly two hours by road), Senga Bay offers lodges, weekend restaurants, and calm water for families. The Sunbird Livingstonia Beach and numerous guesthouses line the shore. Salima town supplies fuel and supplies; ATMs are limited – carry kwacha cash.

Mangochi and Monkey Bay

The Mangochi district opens wider beaches toward Lake Malawi National Park. Monkey Bay is the mainland gateway to Cape Maclear and the Ilala ferry southbound. Fishing villages dot the coast; respect local customs when photographing people or sacred sites.

Cape Maclear (Chembe)

The jewel of the lake for many travellers – golden sand, snorkelling among colourful cichlids, and backpacker-to-upmarket lodges. Otter Point and Thumbi West Island boat trips are highlights. Roads from Mangochi are improving but drive cautiously in rain.

Practical tips

Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, and modest swimwear acceptable to local norms. Negotiate boat prices before departure. Mobile coverage is patchy – tell someone your itinerary. For Likoma and Chizumulu islands, the Ilala ferry runs weekly; flights exist from Lilongwe in season.

Support community tourism: hire local guides, buy fish from licensed sellers, and do not remove rocks or coral. The lake is a UNESCO-related treasure – keep it clean.
