Visiting Liwonde National Park: Wildlife, Lodges, and Travel Tips

Quick summary: Liwonde National Park in southern Malawi is famous for elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and birdlife along the Shire River. Dry season (May-November) offers the best game viewing. Entry fees and guided safaris are booked through African Parks and licensed operators.

Liwonde is Malawi’s most accessible big-game park – a few hours from Blantyre and manageable as a weekend from Lilongwe. Managed in partnership with African Parks since 2015, wildlife numbers have recovered sharply thanks to anti-poaching efforts and translocations of cheetah and lion.

What you will see

Elephants gather at the river at dusk. Hippos grunt through the night; crocodiles bask on sandbanks. Antelope species include waterbuck, impala, and sable in healthier numbers than a decade ago. Birders count hundreds of species – African fish eagle, pel’s fishing owl, and bee-eaters are highlights. Boat safaris get you closer to water wildlife than any minibus game drive.

Getting there and staying

The main gate is near Ulongwe trading centre off the M3 toward Mangochi. Self-drive is possible in a high-clearance vehicle; many visitors book full board at Mvuu Lodge, Kuthengo Camp, or camping at Mvuu Camp. Budget travellers can day-trip with guides from Liwonde town. Fuel up in Balaka or Liwonde boma – none inside the park.

Best time to visit

Dry months concentrate animals at the Shire River as inland pans shrink. November-April brings lush scenery and migrant birds but thicker bush and occasional road closures after storms. Park fees are paid per person per day; residents often pay less than international visitors – carry ID.

Responsible tourism

Stay in vehicles except at designated stops. Do not feed animals. Mosquito nets and prophylaxis are advised in rainy season. Revenue from park fees funds rangers and community programmes – your visit directly supports conservation.
