Malawi School Term Dates 2026: Primary and Secondary Calendar

Quick summary: Malawi’s academic year usually runs January-December with three terms and breaks in April, August, and December. The Ministry of Education publishes the official calendar each year – always confirm dates with your school or district education office before booking travel.

Parents, teachers, and students across Malawi plan around the national school calendar. While the broad pattern is consistent year to year, exact opening and closing dates can shift slightly when the Ministry of Education issues its circular – sometimes adjusted for elections, weather, or public health considerations.

Typical 2026 term structure

Malawi generally follows a three-term system for both primary (Standard 1-8) and secondary (Form 1-4) schools, plus separate calendars for some private and international institutions.

  • Term 1: Opens mid-January; closes early April (around a 12-week term).
  • Term 2: Opens early May; closes early August.
  • Term 3: Opens early September; closes late November or early December.

April, August, and December are the main holiday windows. Form 4 and Standard 8 learners face national examinations (MSCE and PSLCE) on fixed schedules that may extend the final term slightly.

Who sets the dates?

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology issues the authoritative calendar. Government schools follow it strictly. Private schools often align but may add inset days or adjust by a week. Boarding schools sometimes reopen earlier for prefect training or sports.

Planning tips for families

Book transport early for December and April – bus fares on the Lilongwe-Blantyre and M1 corridors spike when schools close. Diaspora visitors should coordinate with guardians on exact reporting dates. Day scholars in rural areas should account for rainy-season road conditions when Term 1 opens in January.

If you run a business near a school – a tuck shop, printing service, or uniform supplier – term dates drive your busiest weeks. Mark the ministry circular on your calendar as soon as it is released.
