Lilongwe became the capital in 1975, replacing Zomba, which had served since the colonial era. Blantyre remains Malawi’s commercial and industrial hub – many visitors assume it is the capital because of its size and business density. Lilongwe was planned as a new capital city with a “Old Town” (original trading centre) and “Capital City” (government district) layout.
